Portrayal of people without legal residence in the media

On the occasion of the International Day of the Migrant, we launch a video that gives an impression of a trajectory of collective reflection on the portrayal of people without legal residence in the media. The current image contributes to the structural stigmatization of this extremely vulnerable group. During six workshops, 22 people without legal residence – supported by the associations ZIN TV, Samenlevingsopbouw Brussel vzw and Pigment vzw – took a close look at the Belgian media. We focused mainly on television news because this is one of the main sources of information for many people.

The resulting publication is both a representation of the process that was run with the group and a pedagogical tool to work with groups on the representation of people without legal residence in the media. There is a French and a Dutch version. The publication serves as educational material to raise the awareness of pupils and students as well as policy makers, institutions, citizens and civil society about the place of undocumented migrants in our society.
